Dear Korea

Dear Korea

Remember when?

As I write this with a smile on my face, because my heart is full. I have truly had the time of my life here in Korea. This time a year and half ago I was home running around getting documents, tests and getting ready for an adventure of a lifetime. I was full of mixed emotions, but most importantly fear and uncertainty. I remember it all like it was year. I had gotten way too comfortable with life and became very UNHAPPY. I started to resent my job, my surroundings and my relationship. That is when I knew I needed a CHANGE or I was going to fall into a deep depression. I did not know what exactly I had to do, but I knew I had to act fast. I remember seeing an ad or email about teaching abroad at my University, but I either deleted the email or threw away the pamphlet. Months later there was a information session about teaching abroad and I went. I am so glad I went, because after the information session I realized the change I needed was right in front of me.

Taking the TESOL course was what sparked my drive for change and wanted to venture off into something new and exciting. I successfully completed the TESOL course and I was then certified to teach English abroad. Fast forward to a year later I was getting emails for interviews from all over and it became so overwhelming. I wanted to go to Spain or Japan, but my TESOL professor and one of the placement advisers from Oxford Seminars also recommended Korea. I decided to listen to both of them and I will be forever glad I did. It was so exciting to turn down a few job offers and I was even more excited when I got the email that I had passed my interview with EPIK (English Program in Korea) and they then sent me my contract and a few documents that I had to mail out to Korea. It was signed, sealed and delivered. May 13th, 2014 was the day my whole life changed. It was the day of my flight to Korea.

This picture was taken in the first hotel I ever stayed in, in Korea; Incheon Prince Airport Hotel. It was expensive and the food was not bad, but it was my first Korean meal. My second place to visit was Jeonju and I stayed at "Jeonju Guest House", it was way cheaper. I remember getting on a bus I believe from the hotel to, no wait...lol. I took a cab from the hotel back to the airport and from the airport I took a bus to Jeonju. I met a man who gave me his business card and told me if I needed any help to contact him, until this day I have not because I was scared a bit. It took me 3 or 4 hours to get to Jeonju, with a 15 minute break. The rest was history after that. I ran with whatever came my way and start to navigate my way through this wonderful country.

Where Does Time Go?

2 year is almost up my dear friends and I am so sad, but so beyond excited to see what my good Lord has in store for me next. I decided not to renew my contract this year, because I feel like is time to go. I will miss my amazing students, who will forever have a place in my heart. These kids have not only shown me so much love, but have taught me more than they will ever know. Everyday was an adventure with them.I will miss all my co-teachers. I will miss my small towns beautiful scenery. I will miss the amazing old couple in my apartment, who never fail to say hi to me,as they go for their morning and evening walk. I will miss Seoul nights, especially my favourite club; BRAND NU.

I want to go to another country to teach and continue to travel, but I have my parents barking at me to get married and give them so grand kids. I come from a strict culture and religious family. My parents are Nigerian and Muslim, so double trouble, lol. I do of course one day want to get married, but I know Gods timing is the best and one day it shall happen. I thank Korea for giving me the opportunity to learn so much about myself. I thank Korea for helping me realize
how strong of a woman I really am. I thank Korea for the opportunity of allowing me to meet some amazing people. I have grown so much as a person, both emotionally and religiously. It is time go now, but I will not say goodbye, simply a see you later my lovely people.

Important Life Lessons Korea has Taught me

1. Change is good.
2. Rejection is a part of life.
3. Loving yourself is the best kind of love.
4. IT IS OKAY NOT TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP.
5. You are EXACTLY where God wants you to be.
6. Learn to ENJOY your own company.
7. Know when to CUT people off.
8. Nothing is PERMANENT (people come and go)
9. Live in the moment.
10. Nothing ever goes as planned.
11. Losing friends is OKAY.

As I get ready to pack and apply for jobs both abroad and home, I am feeling a bit of overwhelmed and worried. I am feeling bittersweet and I know I will miss Korea very much, but I know now that wherever I end up, I will adjust and continue to grow into the woman God wants me to be.  These 2 quotes below sum up my experience here in Korea. See you later, Korea.

Thank you Korea. It has been a blast and thank you for all the memories.
