Prague fitness gyms

Prague fitness gyms

New to Prague ? Just got a job in the Czech Republic ? Read below !

Gyms in Prague

Please read below for a description and short review of the fitness gyms Ive visited in Prague.
Gyms generally fit into two categories:

Luxury Health Clubs
  • these typically require one year membership, and are quite expensive
  • their prices are not listed, you have to talk to a sales representative
  • membership usually includes access to all the facilities (sauna, pool, aerobics programs, etc)
  • most will provide you with free trainers, towels, water, coffee, nutrition advice, etc
  • most have lots of cardio equipment, so you dont have to wait for a run on the treadmill
Normal Fitness Gyms
  • most of these have the prices on their internet site and allow you to pay for a one time visit
  • very good value for money
  • you usually have to pay separately for sauna, pool, trainer, attending specialised workouts, etc
  • you have to bring your own towell
  • usually there are not a lot of bikes or treadmill machines available(they are very expensive)

Luxury

World Class Health Academy
Prague 1

A nice luxury health club, you get free water, towels, coffee, a small pool(about 15m long) to cool down in after a hot sauna. There are lots of fitness and cardio machines, so wait time is minimal even when it is crowded.
If you are shy be careful when exiting the shower, as the cleaning girls will just walk around there minding their business.
Very many different types of workout classes are available, all listed on their website. Nothing to complain about here, except the price, 9000 CZK for 30 entrances if you bring a friend.
They have a few branches in Prague, check out their website for details.

Holmes Place Premium Karlin(czech language only)
Prague 8

A fancy gym for fancy people. Very high number of cardio machines, bikes, treadmills, everything, lots of
fancy activities like Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyPump, Vibration Station, etc.
Nice and big locker room, with plenty of space.
Not so many weight machines or benches, and they are all too close together  to make room for all the other equipment, so if your main focus is lifting weights, not such a good place. There are some mats on the floor to do some stretching.
Pool is nice, but a bit shallow, 18m long and about 1.4m deep.
Saunas are very nice, they are mixed, and swimming suites are not allowed in the sauna, just your towel.
Price is around 9000 CZK for 24 entrances.
They have a number of locations in Prague, but if you have a pass for one you cant use it for the others, more details on their websites(in czech) or on www.expats.cz

Balance Club
Prague 4

I never actually visited this club, but on the website it looks very nice. Unfortunately the price
is also very high, i was quoted an admission fee of 5000 CZK and a monthly fee of 3300 CZK.
If this is in your budget you should definately check it out.

Regular Gyms

Fitness Power
Prague 4

A cheap small gym in Prague 4, their prices are listed on their website. A decent place for
weight lifting, but the equipment is a bit old, and there arent a lot of machines to use.
Cardio equipment is virtually absent, there were a few bikes but they were very uncomfortable, and only one
treadmill which nobody was using.
Also annoying is that you have to change or leave your shoes at the entrance and then walk through the gym to the locker room. The locker room is very small and with only one shower. Overall a low budget gym, a good place to lift some weights if you are on tight budget.

Flora Gym
Prague 3

Prices on the website.
This is more of a bodybuilders gym, a nice array of weights, benches, and all the muscle machines you can
think of. Plenty of guys who look like they could be on the cover of a bodybuilding magazine.
Equipment is not brand new, but gets the job done, and there are also a couple of mats to stretch out on. Some of the iron discs where confusingly labelled in LBS instead of KGS, so be aware of what you are lifting.
The locker room area is a bit tight, there isnt a lot of space to move around, and it doesnt look very clean.
The cardio area is well equipped, enough bikes and treadmills to choose from.
During the week after 18:00 you can get 3 hours of free parking at the Flora mall, otherwise dont go by car to this gym, big problem to park(like everywhere in the center of Prague).
So overall a nice gym, good value for money.

Fitness Star Chodov
Prague 4

Somewhat similar to Fitness Power which is also in Prague 4, but a bit cleaner and with more equipment.
They also make you take off your shoes and walk to the locker rooms in your socks, but this time you dont
have to traverse the gym this way.
The locker room is kind of small, and also a bit annoying is that you have to leave your shoes in one locker
room, and your clothes in another.
Reasonable amount of space, all the machines you need, free weights, etc. Cardio area is small as you would expect from a budget gym, but there is a decent treadmill and a couple of nice stationary bikes. There is also a big punching bag if you want to let off some steam.
Its usually not very crowded, a single entry is 100 czk, but you can find more prices on their website, they offer other services too, like a solarium.
So overall a good gym, but it is a bit far from everything, and i had some trouble finding it even with a gps,
once you get to the LIDL which is close to it, you need to go to the right of the building and climb up a few stairs.
